A quint is not there to have it's crew do two jobs (truck work and engine work), it's there to make those tasks easier.įunny. I do not believe in using quints to reduce manpower as some paid departments have done/tried to do. Only difference between now and then is I'm not so young anymore. Not the smartest thing to do, but I was young and stupid. Not that I ever waited myself, started knocking down many a fire with PWs and dry chem extinguishers. Nothing feel worse than being out and about, finding a fire, not having a pump or water on your truck, and having to wait for a pumper to come do the job. the biggest argument I have for a quint is that it will be a self-sufficient. check for the list of equipment and their equivalencies for outfitting the truck.
#Quint fire truck iso
If properly equipped, a quint will count as both a pumper and a ladder company for ISO purposes, so sending 1 quint and 1 pumper on a fire call satisfies the 2 pumper, 1 ladder/service company requirement for the units needing to be dispatched to all fire calls (alarm systems included) ISO radius for aerial devices is 2.5 miles, pumpers 1.5. Low-hazard occupancies (one-, two-, or three-family dwellings, and scattered businesses and industrial occupancies): at least two pumpers, one ladder truck, and other specialized apparatus as may be identified or available. Medium-hazard occupancies (apartments, offices, mercantile and industrial not normally requiring extensive rescue or firefighting capabilities): at least 3 pumpers, one ladder truck, and other specialized apparatus as may be identified or available. High-hazard occupancies (schools, hospitals, nursing homes, high-rise buildings): at least four pumpers, two ladder trucks, and other specialized apparatus as may be identified or available for the hazard.

In addition to the ISO recommendations, NFPA Standards in the NFPA Fire Protection Handbook (18th Edition) Table 10-2A recommends the following response patterns: According to the Insurance Service Organization (ISO) recommendations Section 540, “response areas with 5 buildings that are 3 stories or 35 feet or more in height, or 5 buildings that have a Needed Fire Flow greater than 3,500gpm, or any combination of these criteria, should have a ladder company.â€
